The Route to Circular Economy in Packaging : Recyclable Solutions Feasibility and Consistency for the Industry
Presented by Raffaele Guadagno, Nordmeccanica spa
This paper illustrates the main steps and the preliminary results of a project, still in progress, to develop solutions for fully recyclable packages as requested by European legislation and pursued by all major actors in the field. Two aspects aim to make this project an innovative approach:
- the solutions will be differentiated to cover defined and important food packaging segments representing, expectedly, real and consistent substitute of existing multilayer structures with equivalent functional, aesthetic and utilization properties, and
- the entire production cycle will be analysed in terms of technological and cost efficiency, recyclable and re-use assessment, end-of-life environmental impact.
The paper will give an hint of multiple actors contribution, representing the entire production and waste disposal chain, being coordinated by the project partners, Cipak-Parma University and Nordmeccanica : the former, covering the scientific aspects, such as material science, process modelling, food packaging requirement, experimental capability and methodology, waste recycling and re-use and Nordmeccanica, contributing for the industrial and process technology with special expertise in film vacuum and atmospheric coating processing and an established presence to perceive the industry new requirements.
