Web Wise: Are you my customer?

Many of us recall the P.D. Eastman children’s book, Are You My Mother? Like most children’s books, the lesson and answer are simple. In this case, the presumption is that you only have one Mom.

Life is much more complicated in industry, specifically related to customers. You might even have a whole village of customers. A case could be made that your immediate boss or supervisor is your customer. That is because you are “selling” your time and talent in exchange for salary (and promotions). The boss has every right to expect a quality work product, on-time delivery and at the agreed-upon price. That work products of a process engineer could be successfully attending to waste, delay or (end-use) customer complaints.
