The optimum method to characterize a coated film immediately after it is being coated. Characterizing film after it has been coated will result in significant losses when defects are present. Two classes of on-line quality systems are available. Surface Inspection for defects and Coating Weight Measurement. They characterize the coated film after the coating applicator. This rapid detection reduces losses defects because corrective action can be taken before a whole roll of wide stock is coated and has to be scrapped. Real time experiments can be run to determine causes and corrective action. The systems capability and costs are improving and as result usage is expanding in production and pilot coaters.
