In this talk I will show why the secret to making good barrier coatings is to manage the defects. The defects can be related to the quality of the film surface both including the original surface quality as well as the final surface quality that includes any particles that have ended on the surface. Eliminating defects can be difficult, if not impossible, and so it is common to have strategies to overcome the defects. This often means that the defects are, at best, reduced and not completely eliminated. This leads to other strategies to improve the barrier performance although these may only be temporary.
